Day at the Capitol | In Washington
A word from Lisa Flowers, President & CEO, on
her recent advocacy trip to Washington D.C....
On October 15-17, I joined thirty-one North
Texas business and civic leaders and traveled
to our nation’s Capitol for North Texas
Commission’s (NTC) Inaugural Advocacy Trip.
The group’s objective was to meet with lawmakers,
administration and agency heads to advocate for
business issues facing our region and to further
promote NTC’s legislative priorities.
The trip kicked off with a Welcome Reception on
Tuesday at Toyota’s D.C. office where we heard from
Congressman Marc Veasey followed by a Moonlight
Monuments Tour to learn more about the history
of our nation. Wednesday morning began at the
National Association of Manufacturers where our
group was briefed on trade/USMCA, immigration,
and the current probability for this Congress to act
before the end of the year. Our morning concluded
with a White House briefing from Chris Chaffee, a
senior White House official.
Our group then embarked upon Capitol Hill to
visit with our North Texas delegation of lawmakers.
We heard from Senator Ted Cruz, Congresswoman
Eddie Bernice Johnson, Congressmen Roger
Williams, Lance Gooden, Colin Allred, Ron
Wright, and Van Taylor. Additionally, we heard
from other Texas Congressmen including Michael
McCaul, Ranking 4 Member on Foreign Affairs and
Jodey Arrington on Ways and Means.
That evening, NTC hosted a reception and
Chairman’s dinner with Senator John Cornyn,
Congressman Michael Burgess, a Medal of
Honor representative, and former Congressman
Jim Gerlach the President/CEO of BIPAC. The
trip concluded Thursday morning at Bell’s D.C.
office with an analysis on the House, Senate, and
Presidential 2020 elections with Inside Elections
analyst, Leah Askarinam. Afterwards, we toured
Bell’s Advanced Vertical Flight Center and
experienced their flight simulator.
NTC’s first Advocacy Trip to D.C. was a
tremendous success and it was my honor and
privilege to represent businesses in Parker County.
The staff at North Texas Commission did an
amazing job organizing this event and I am honored
to serve on the NTC Board this year.
East Parker County Chamber will be planning
our own Advocacy Trip to Washington, D.C. in
2020. Stay tuned for details. n
